Hair extensions are made from a range of human and synthetic fibers. Synthetic fibers include Kanekalon and Toyokalon, and can differ from brand to brand. Synthetic hair in general is less expensive than human hair, and is available in a wide array of colors and textures, from natural to extraordinary. Human hair is available in many different grades, and is usually advertised by ethnic origin; India, China and other Asian countries are the top suppliers for 'virgin', or unprocessed hair. Eastern European countries are the source of 'caucasian' hair available. Whether human or synthetic, the hair available is produced in several ways:
Bulk Hair Extensions Bulk hair is hair which is not attached to a weft track, thus is usually looped, doubled over, or loosely braided for ease of use. This hair can be used for a variety of things, from braids, loose extensions or dreadlocks. Synthetic loose fibers include 'Jumbo Braid'; this is a type of hair with a kinky texture, that is popular in braided extensions. Loose human hair is generally used for a single-point bonding, where the extensionist creates singe loose extensions either using metal rings, wax or glue.
Weft Hair Extensions
Commonly, extensions are sold in the form of a weft, often called 'tracks'. There is stitching at the top of the weft, bonding the hair to a thin ribbon, or in the hand-sewn wefts, the hair is bonded only to itself, and from there the hair hangs loose. The stitching is either sewn on a machine or made by "hand". The two differs in the stitching. The "hand made" stitch is typically thinner and more delicate, hence more expensive than the machine made. The hair attached to the weft can be human or synthetic hair of any texture, and almost any color. The width of the weft comes in different sizes. Depending on the length of the hair, the width will vary which is due to the fact that all the commercial wefted hair extensions are sold in 1/4lb or 4ozs. For instance, a 10 inch length hair will have about 70-80 inches in width and 22 inch length hair will have about 36-48 inches in width. The handtied wefts however are usually about 10" wide but it CANNOT be cut otherwise it will unravel.
Pre-Tipped Hair Extensions
Hair extensions can be purchased with tips already attached with glue tips. Usually they're tipped with keratin glue and it's either made like the tip of your shoe string or flat. The "shoe string" tips are applied with a metal rings and the method is called hair locs or fusion tips. You don't need to melt the tips with a hot heating iron and it's also easily removed. The flat tips are also another convenient variation of the pre-tipped hair. The tips have more keratin glues that can be melted with a heatin iron. The fusion method is the traditional way that this method came about. Instead of having to buy the hair, the glue gun and the glues separately, the hair and the glues come together. You'll simply melt the tip and mold it with your fingers. Pre-Tipped Hair extensions can be purchased in many

Quality
The quality of the hair is often specified.
Virgin hair indicates that the hair hasn't been colored or processed in any way. The "virgin hair" is collected from one person only and comes in a bulk, not in wefts or strands.
Remi (=Remy) is a term used when all of the hair is human plus when 'close to' all of the strands (eg. in one weft) are strictly organized with the roots in one direction and the tip to the opposide end. Remi hair in general last much longer than non-remi and tends to stay shiny and "tangle free" longer. This is based on the fact that every strand of hair is biologically keratinized skin cells organized in layers overlapping one another. Imagine trees with branches all aligned in one direction side by side. If the trees were not aligned in the same directions, then the branches would all tangle each other.
Cuticle Hair is Remi hair but in a higher quality. All Remi is not the same. In order for hair to be a high quality, it must come from healthy source and durable.

Application of Hair Extensions
The misnomer of 'tracks' comes from the common, long-lasting method of integrating wefts, known as the 'track and sew' method. The 'tracks' are usually cornrows, braided in the direction of how the hair will fall. Toward the face or away, with or without a part, the tracks build the foundation of how the end result will look. The wefts are then sewn onto the braids, usually with a specially made, blunt-ended needle. The needle can be curved or straight. There are many different colors of specially-made thread to choose from, depending on what color of hair you will be integrating. Darker hair lends to darker thread. It should also be noted that when the hair is braided at a high level of tension, the client is at risk for traction alopecia.
Weaving - A braided track is created on the person head with either ones own hair or mixing it with synthetic hair. Then the wefted hair extensions is sewn on with weaving needle and thread. Creating the right track is important because if the track is too large, then it's too bulky. Wefts may also be bonded directly to the clients hair using special bonding glue. Care must be taken not to bond the wefts directly to the scalp, as it can cause sensitivities in some clients. A patch test is frequently recommended, as per manufacturer's directions(MFD).
Infrequently, wefts may be clipped in, with specially made clips sewn to the wefts themselves. This makes for a more temporary style, and is easily removed. Clipped-in wefts may add temporary color, length or fullness perhaps for a single event, such as a prom or wedding.
Bulk hair can also be bonded to the hair, using many different methods: from clips to adhesive.
Bonding hair extensions is simple and quick. It's temporary so save it for one day use or for a special photo session when you want to flaunt your new hair do. It's simply applying hair bonding glue on a track and attaching it on the root of your hair. Blow dry for about 10 seconds with no heat and you got instant hair extensions! Buy Hair Bonding Glue
Hair Fusion is a permanent method. Now, there's so many variations of this type these days and so find out which method your stylist is able to do the best work for you. The main method is called the fusion method. Keratin glue sticks and glue gun which is similar to a ceramic glue gun is what you need to get started. You can use any type of hair to so this method. Pre-Tipped hair extensions is another variation of Fusion that is widely used today. It's easy to work with because the hair comes with the glue tip. All is required is a Fusion Iron which melts the glue tip and then you mold the glue with your own hair. Another variations is hair locs which is a method where you again use a pre-tipped hair but this time the tip is shaped into a shoe string. You insert the tip into a metal fusion ring and close it tightly. It's non-heat method and can be removed by opening the ring. One last method is the Cold Fusion. This is applying pre-tipped hair extensions by melting the tip with a super sonic iron. The super sonic noise emitted by the metal tips breaks down the glue and then you mold the tip with your fingers. Exactly the same as the traditional fusion method by melting the glue tip but without the heat. This is very interesting! However, it does make an irritable, high pitch noise!
How much hair do you need?
Well for hair extensions in general and we mean "generally" you would probably need about two packs of hair. That would be two 1/4lb hair. Most commercial hair extensions in bulk and weave, are sold by 1/4lb. So let's say your doing a whole entire head of weaves, you'll need two bags of hair or 1/2 lb of hair extensions. Now let's say, you don't want whole head. If you want to make the back full, then one pack of hair would be enough. But careful, if you buy a very long hair, about 26" length, then you'll need more than one. The reason being is that hair extensions are sold by weight of 1/4lb only. So you'll have less hair to work with if you buy a real long hair like 30" than you would a 10" hair. Keep that in mind and decide properly.
